Linguistic Summer School

About LISSIM-12

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Delhi, in collaboration with FOSSSIL (Formal Studies in the Syntax and Semantics of Indian Languages), is organising a seven-day residential Linguistic Summer School from 1–7 June 2026 at the IIT Delhi Campus, Sonipat.

The twelfth edition of LISSIM, originally planned for 2020, had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The present Summer School aims to revive the academic tradition and collaborative spirit of LISSIM.

LISSIM-12 is open to students interested in pursuing research in theoretical syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. The programme will focus on:

Understanding the interplay between case, binding, and agreement within current theoretical models of syntax
Discussing how distinct discourse strategies in Indian languages can contribute to the advancement of theories in formal semantics

Admission to the programme is competitive, and participation is limited to 20 students to ensure intensive academic engagement and discussion.

The Summer School will be held at the IIT Sonipat Technopark, a modern residential academic facility equipped with classrooms, guest accommodation, and dining spaces. The venue provides an ideal environment for communal living, collaborative learning, and focused academic interaction.

📝 Application

The Linguistic Summer School LISSIM-12 is open to students interested in conducting research in theoretical syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Admission is competitive and the number of participants is limited to 20 students.

Application Requirements

The application for the Summer School has three components:

Personal Information
Personal particulars, including (a) name, (b) affiliation, (c) current/ past qualifications, (d) areas of interest, (e) list of linguistics courses taken, and (f) reason for participation (in 300 words);
Essay Submission
A 2-page essay (maximum 1500 words) authored by the student on any one of the following questions:

(a) How can novel data from Indian languages be used to understand the interplay between case, binding and agreement within current theoretical models of syntax (Minimalism onwards)? Discuss with reference to your native language(s).

(b) Discuss the potential of distinct discourse strategies in Indian languages for advancing theories of formal syntax and semantics with reference to novel data from your native language(s).

Reference Contact
Applicants must provide the name and contact details of one supervisor or instructor who can comment on their academic preparation and motivation in syntax and semantics.

Registration Fee

Applicants from SAARC countries:

Faculty: ₹10000

Postdoc: ₹8000

PhD student with JRF/institute fellowship: ₹7000

PhD student with Non-NET/ no fellowship: ₹5000

MA student: ₹5000

Applicants from non-SAARC countries:

Faculty: $500

Postdoc: $450

Student: $400

The registration fees includes stay, food and tuition for the 7-day Summer School.
